On 14-15 September 2023, VNUA was the Co-host for the 5th Workshop on Interdisciplinary Sciences (WIS2023). The WIS 2023 was jointly organized by Kyushu University, the Satellite Meeting of the 10th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2023 Tokyo), and Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA).

In 2023, academic committee of the WIS invited 17 keynote speakers and 19 poster presenters. A total of 170 registered participants (70 onsite and 100 online participants) came from 8 countries including Japan, Australia, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Denmark, and Vietnam. A total of 40 participants including professors, faculty memmbers and students from VNUA joined online in the Conference.

In the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Pham Bao Duong - Vice President of VNUA highlighted the contribution of applied mathematics, Artificial intelligence (AI), and statistics to the change in social life and economic activities. Agriculture, which is the most risky sector in the economy, needs the support tools for more accuracy and optimistic decisions.

Opening Speech of Prof. Dr. Pham Bao Duong at WIS2023

After the Opening Section, keynote speakers presented cutting-edge topics in applied mathematics, AI, and statistics in Modelling clogging in granular assembly when treating acidic groundwater; forecasting electricity demand, and predicting traffic accidents. Scholars also presented their work on the Turing pattern applied in studying reaction-diffusion systems in population biology. The stability analysis of a single-species logistic model with time delay and constant inflow was also explained. The dynamic prey-predator relation with cooperative hunting among specialist predators was also modeled. The next presenter introduced how Bayesian Inference with Variational Bayes should used for Interdisciplinary Sciences. Audiences also enjoyed the research on data-driven solutions applied in engineering education. The bio-inspired mathematical models were also explained in the WIS 2023 like the dynamical movements of individuals in spatial ecology; asymptotic behavior of solutions for the honeycomb construction model and Predatory-Fish Hunting models.

On the second day, scholars discovered the prospectives of data-based smart agriculture. The plant phenotyping technology in smart farms, plant phenotyping methods using image analysis, machine learning, mathematics, and morphometrics were explored. Math applied in the material sciences for AI-driven design of photo-resisting polymers.

The WIS2023 also spent space to discuss the challenges for developing countries like Vietnam, to develop a modern, circular, and low-emission agriculture (for example the case of cooperative development; creating the agro-based sustainable coffee production in Central Highland or investigating Varietal and agronomic practices for Qunioa to grow in the salty soil areas of the country). In management science, Vietnamese researchers present a case where corporate failure risks were predicted based on Multilayer Perceptron.

The Conference spent the last Section visiting 19 posters provided by the young researchers. Topics are diversified showing how mathematical and statistical models, AI, machine learning, and data sciences can be applied in the industry, particularly in agriculture, and optimization. The WIS 2023 awarded 01 Best Poster, 01 Most Popular Award, 01 Best Interdisciplinary Research Poster. In addition, Academic Committee decided to add more 04 “Highly Commended Awards” for their excellent presentation and quality.

The WIS 2023 has successfully obtained the aim to create and platform for researchers in various fields to present their updated works. The two-day workshop is open for experts to share their insights and findings. It shows how close math and statistics are to stimulating nature and solving problems of social life.
